Questions About Breast Reconstruction

Plastic Surgeon Serving Orlando, Winter Park and Nearby Areas of Central Florida

How long does the breast reconstruction process take?

Breast reconstruction with lipofilling is a process that sometimes requires more than one scarless fat grafting procedure to complete. The total length of your treatment time will depend on your unique needs, and how your body responds to the initial fat graft. During your consultation with Dr. Hartog, we will discuss your mastectomy and work with you to outline a treatment plan.

You will need to wear the BRAVA® device before your breast reconstruction procedure(s) in order to expand your breast tissue. BRAVA® makes room for your fat graft by stretching the breast tissue, and also improves blood circulation to increase the survival of the fat transfer. Your commitment to wearing the BRAVA® device – especially during the week before your procedure – will play a major role in the success of your final results.

Will my breast reconstruction interfere with future cancer screenings?

If you choose to have a natural, scarless breast reconstruction with lipofilling, future mammograms and screenings will be entirely unaffected.

On the other hand, if you choose to have breast reconstruction performed with implants, you will need to let the doctor performing your cancer screenings in the future know, so they can use an alternative screening method if necessary.

Why should I choose fat grafting for my breast reconstruction instead of breast implants?

Using fat transfer for your breast reconstruction after a mastectomy has several significant advantages, such as:

  • No scarring (only a tiny needle is used)
  • No foreign objects in your body
  • 100% natural
  • 100% outpatient procedure
  • Faster recovery time
  • More affordable
  • More precise results
  • Added benefit of liposuction and body contouring at the donor site
  • Avoidance of major complications associated with breast implants and tissue flap procedures

Additionally, ADRC-enriched fat grafts can help heal and restore breast tissue that has been damaged by radiation and the mastectomy procedure.

I had a breast reconstruction performed by another surgeon and am now experiencing complications. Can Dr. Hartog help me?

Yes. We routinely help patients who are either dissatisfied with the results of their initial breast reconstruction, or experiencing complications – such as tissue flap failure, infected implants, and severe capsular contracture. With fat grafting, Dr. Hartog is often able to salvage these failed procedures, transforming a crippled and distorted breast into one that looks and feels normal again.
