Get Your Glow Back at our Peel Party on Thursday, November 6th!

Hi! My name is Renee and I have been providing advanced skin care treatments at Dr. Hartog's office for several years. I am so excited to let our patients know about two new facial peels we are now offering that provide amazing results - SkinMedica's Vitalize Peel and Illuminize Peel!

The Vitalize Peel is a great peel for patients who've done glycolic or Jessner's or perhaps are looking for a peel that gives great results. This peel uses a unique blend of safe but effective acids to cause chemical exfolation of the outer layer of skin. Skin regeneration after this peel results in a fresh, radiant complexion with visible improvement in pigment.

The Illuminize Peel is great for first-time peel patients as it uses mild alpha hydroxy acids that will maximize skin rejuvenating effects with low irritation. It will help to increase skin glow and radiance, tighten the skin and restore a more youthful appearance, improve clarity, color and skin texture with little or no downtime.

Please email me at rtaylor@bougclin.com for more information or to reserve your spot!!!
Our Peel Party will be on Thursday, November 6th from noon - 6 pm.

Breast Augmentation and Pregnancy

A pregnant woman goes through numerous changes during nine months of pregnancy. Even after the baby is born, her body continues to change. For most new mothers, weight loss is a prime concern, prompting new mothers to seek breast augmentation as a solution to regaining their pre-pregnancy attractiveness.

Most women who choose to receive breast implants before pregnancy see little change in breast shape or size after pregnancy. Some problems that may occur include:
  • Mild tissue volume loss
  • Some sagging, particularly if stretch marks are present before augmentation

A breast lift might be a good option to counteract post-pregnancy sagging.

For new moms who are planning to breastfeed, it may be wise to wait until after breastfeeding has ceased before undergoing breast augmentation. Mainly, although the breast's milk-producing glands are not harmed in any way or disturbed by a breast augmentation, some women experience breast sagging when milk production stops. So while augmentation doesn't prevent breast feeding, it's best to wait a bit after baby is born before undergoing the procedure.

In summary, keep these 5 tips in mind when considering breast augmentation before or after pregnancy:
  1. Breast implants generally do not interfere with pregnancy
  2. Pregnancy generally will not interfere with your breast implants
  3. Most women are able to breastfeed their child after breast augmentation
  4. Breasts enhanced with implants may avoid the typical loss of volume and shape that can occur with pregnancy and breastfeeding
  5. Always choose a qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon with the training and experience necessary to ensure the best results for you.

Dr. Jeffrey Hartog of Orlando, Florida's Bougainvillea Clinique welcomes your questions and concerns about breast augmentation and pregnancy. Please contact us if you would like to schedule a personal consultation.

Breast Implants and Breast Cancer Screenings

Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer after lung cancer, and the most common female cancer. Screening, along with early detection and treatment, is crucial to defending yourself against this insidious killer. Physical examination, mammography and at-home breast self examination are the keys to early detection.

How might breast implants interfere with cancer screening? In 2007, 399,440 breast implants surgeries were performed, according to The American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Studies show that breast implants do not interfere with treatment for breast cancer.

Today's advanced cosmetic surgeons use the latest saline and silicone gel breast implants, prompting the creation of customized X-ray techniques like the Eklund view to ensure breast implants do not interfere with mammography readings. However, this specialized testing may still provide false negative results.

Between the ages of 20 and 40, a mammography is suggested every three years. After 40, a mammography should be performed every year. Mammography is a special X-ray of the breast from a variety of angles. Public education on the importance of mammography has decreased the incidence of deaths from breast cancer by 25%.

Monthly breast self examination is also invaluable, helping to detect lumps in breast tissue and alerting women to the need for consulting with their physician immediately.

If you have concerns about whether breast implants may interfere with your breast cancer screenings, please contact Dr. Jeffrey Hartog in Orlando, Florida for more information.

Incision Options for Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a popular procedure for women dissatisfied with the size, shape or volume of their breasts. While the debate about silicone vs. saline implants continues, there are other important decisions to make, including choosing the type of incision that will provide optimum results.

Four different types of incisions are available:
  • Inframammary (in the breast crease)
  • Transaxillary (in the armpit)
  • Periareolar (around the areola)
  • TUBA (inside the navel)

The incision type chosen by Dr. Jeffrey Hartog depends on:
  • Dr. Hartog's preferences for your specific procedure
  • The results you hope to achieve
  • Your body type
  • Your chosen type of implant
  • Whether you have scar tissue from a previous breast augmentation or mastectomy

TUBA
The TUBA method (Transumbilical Breast Augmentation) uses a small incision inside the navel, creating tiny tunnels through which the implants are placed.

The advantages of this procedure are:
  • Scar hidden inside the navel
  • Faster recovery time
  • Decreased risk of nipple or breast nerve damage
  • Reduced tissue trauma
  • Shorter operation time

To find out more about the breast augmentation option that is right for you, please contact Dr. Jeffrey Hartog today to schedule your consultation at the Bougainvillea Clinique in Orlando, Florida.

Rhinoplasty

Each year, more than two hundred thousand Americans choose Rhinoplasty, commonly called a 'nose job', to alter, enhance or decrease the shape or size of their noses.

The nose is a focal point on the face. For some individuals, it is not complementary to the rest of the face's size or shape, or it may be crooked or have an unattractive hump. Altering the size or shape of one's nose can have a dramatic effect on facial appearance.

The rhinoplasty procedure is not usually approved for individuals under the age of 15 or 16, because our noses are supported by delicate bones and moveable cartilage that are not fully developed until that point.

Rhinoplasty can help alter the size or shape of the nose in several ways:
  • Increasing or decreasing overall size of the nose
  • Changing the shape of the bridge or tip
  • Correcting birth defects
  • Restoring tissue damaged or destroyed by trauma
  • Correcting breathing difficulties caused by nasal obstruction

The rhinoplasty procedure is performed under general anesthesia, usually lasting two to three hours. From the very first day after surgery, you'll see improvement, and that improvement will continue to become more evident over the year following surgery.

To learn more about how Rhinoplasty can improve your appearance, please contact Dr. Jeffrey Hartog in Orlando, Florida.

New 'Gummy Bear' Breast Implants on the horizon

Having completed fairly extensive studies in Europe and the US, both Mentor and Allergan are hoping for FDA approval of their more cohesive 'gummy-bear' implants. These implants appear to have significant advantages particularly in terms of wrinkling, over saline implants and presently available round gel implants. For very slim individuals, with very little soft tissue in the breast area, particularly on the side, this will be a significant improvement. These new implants are also textured and shaped to provide a natural anatomic shape to the breast. One slight disadvantage is that they may not move quite as naturally as the softer smooth round gel implants that are presently the most popular gel implants in the United States. Because these implants wrinkle less, it is also likely that they last longer than implants that wrinkle more.
Though ideal for some patients, these implants are not ideal for everyone. They will be most suitable for those who are looking for the most natural, and a modest increase in breast size. Those who are seeking larger augmentations will not be suitable candidates for these implants. Presently about 30% of implants used in Europe are the shaped 'gummy-bear' gels. Check back regularly on this site, and if you wish to be notified when they are released in the United States, email Bronwyn, our Cosmetic Surgery Consultant, at bkohn@bougclin.com to be placed on the list.

Facelift

Are the effects of gravity, sun exposure, and an active lifestyle causing creases and wrinkles on your face? Do you look older than you feel, or have a tired look? Then a facelift may be a good option to help you look and feel better.

The facelift is a common and popular cosmetic surgical procedure designed to remove excess fat, tighten facial muscles, and reposition the facial skin for a restored and refreshed appearance. It can give you a whole new outlook on life.

The best candidates for facelifts have some skin elasticity. Patients in the 40-60 year age group fit this requirement, but older patients can also achieve excellent results. A facelift can correct wrinkling caused by loose and sagging skin, jowls in the lower cheek area and skin folds in the neck. They are often performed in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures, such as a blepharoplasty (eyelift) and facial liposuction.

Thermage, laser resurfacing, Botox and collagen are also excellent treatment additions to the facelift procedure.

For individuals with signs of early facial aging, the Aptos Threadlift may be the perfect solution to a refreshed, more youthful appearance. Sometimes called the 'lunchtime lift', the Aptos Threads procedure offers far less downtime than the traditional facelift, with no incisions and using only local anesthetic. Aptos Threads can be combined with other surgical or non-surgical techniques, including facial and neck liposuction, eyelid surgery, chemical peels or laser procedures.

The Tummy Tuck

Abdominoplasty, also known as a "tummy tuck," is a major cosmetic surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen, tightening the muscles of the abdominal wall.

The best candidates for Abdominoplasty are men or women who are in good physical and emotional health, who lead active lifestyles but are bothered by abdominal fat that does not respond well to diet and exercise.

Two types of Abdominoplasty

1. Mini- Abdominoplasty
The best candidates for the mini-abdominoplasty have mild to moderate amounts of abdominal skin excess, minimal or no stretch marks, and /or minimal lower abdominal protuberance. The mini-abdominoplasty removes three to four inches of skin and fat from the lower abdomen, tightening the lower abdominal muscles. Liposuction is combined with the mini-abdominoplasty for even greater results. Recovery time is usually significantly shorter than for full Abdominoplasty.

2. Full Abdominoplasty
Full abdominoplasty uses a horizontal "bikini line" incision across the lower abdomen to remove or tighten stretched, damaged skin and excess fatty tissue of the entire abdomen. Liposuction is sometimes combined with the full abdominoplasty for a natural result. Patients wear an abdominal binder for approximately four weeks, and avoid strenuous activity for six weeks, but are often able to return to work after just one week.

At Dr. Jeffrey Hartog's Bougainvillea Clinique in Orlando, Florida, the tummy tuck is a popular procedure for creating a more taut and youthful figure. To find out if abdominoplasty is an option for you, please contact us to schedule your consultation.
